Sick again

This week has been very hard for our family. On top of some personal issues I'm dealing with (which will remain private, sorry) A came down with a nasty cold. Last Monday I decided to take her in to the Dr because I was scheduled to watch my niece the next day and I wanted to make sure she would be healthy enough to go with me. Unfortunately, she wasn't. But it wasn't too bad, just a viral cold.

Then her cold symptoms never went away. We (not so) patiently waited the recommended 7-10 days before contacting the Dr again. By day 10 she was miserable. This was our worst day/ night up until that point. After only sleeping 4 (interrupted) hours the night before, Jamie decided to call the Dr while I was out of the house watching my niece. Apparently, A had cried non-stop the entire 2 hours I was gone. By the time I made it home, she was just about asleep due to exhaustion, but we had to rush out the door to her apt with the Dr.

We knew something else was going on and our first thought was her ears. A has only had one ear infection that I recall so it's not like it's common, and thankfully it isn't. It only took the Dr two minutes to diagnose an ear infection. Thank God we had a diagnosis with a type of "cure." I hate when my babies are sick with a viral something and there's nothing I can do to make them better or to make it go away faster.

At this point we were hopeful that we could give her the meds and by that night she would start to feel better. Boy, were we wrong. We got home just in time to get A down for her nap. While she was sleeping Jamie went to the store to get her meds so that they would be ready when she woke up. Once she got up from nap, we noticed that her ear had been draining. Our Dr did warn us about this, so we weren't too concerned. What we didn't know was that it was going to completely change A's mood. We thought her screaming before was bad, but now it was really bad. We made the decision to give her both Tylenol and Motrin every three hours around the clock so we could keep her as comfortable as possible, but by the second dose, we knew that wasn't going to be the case. The pain meds were only giving her about 45 minutes of relief before the pain would set back in. Desperate, I decided to call the Dr back. Thankfully it was only 4 o'clock so the office was still open. At that point they rushed through a prescription for ear drops.

That was the best decision yet. After her first dose, we put a very small piece of cotton in her ear to keep the meds from draining out. At that point, she was able to be content for the three hours between each pain medication dose.

We're now on day two since we started the antibiotics, and A is a new child. She's playing and happy.

A quick minute

So I hopped on here for just a quick minute to write about little Miss. She hasn't been feeling well for the past few days (which is why I haven't been able to do my huge Christmas recap) so I finally took her to the doctor this morning. Thankfully we were given an answer, an ear infection. Lucky for her, she's only had one before this (unlike her mommy) when she was just a few months old. So today we start her on antibiotics and pray that by tomorrow she'll start to feel normal again. The only positive in all of this is that I've gotten more cuddles than usual. So for now, it's off to bed for a much needed nap (while little Miss is taking hers). I'll be back on later today to update my photo for the day here.

Sick baby

For the past week A hasn't been feeling well. Once I noticed something wasn't quite right I went through the whole mommy checklist in my head to try and figure out what could be wrong.

First I thought it was her teeth. But after a day or so on pain meds she wasn't feeling any better.

So I then started to think it was her tummy due to the introduction of whole milk. I gave her a few doses of Colic Calm and cut dairy out of her diet for 24 hours to see if there would be a difference. Nope.

And then the fever begins.

Last night, right before bed, I noticed that A felt a little warm. I got out the thermometer and took her temp, it read 102. I was surprised. I then gave her the usual Tylenol before bed and didn't think anything else of it. That was until this morning when I went to get her up.

She was on fire!

I quickly got the thermometer again and took her temp. Now it read 103.5! Begin mommy freak out mode. I quickly called the Dr to see if they could get us in before I had to go to work in the afternoon. Fortunately they were able to see us at 9am. Once we got there, the Dr checked her over and couldn't find anything wrong with her. Everything looked great. Her ears, chest, and throat all looked fine. That's when we were told to play the waiting game. Wait to see what was going to happen next.

At 3:30pm I arrived back home after work. Jamie had called me about a half hour earlier to tell me she was still hot so I told him to go ahead and give her the meds. I then took her temp and it was now 104.1! Official mommy panic now. I pick up the phone to call the Dr just to check how high her fever should get before I need to bring her in for medical treatment. They then told me that it wasn't so much how high it got, just a matter of if I can get it down. At this point she had her meds in her for almost an hour, so for her temp to still be that high, we were concerned. Fortunately, about 15 minutes later she began to sweat and broke her fever.

As of right now (9pm) she's been hovering around the 100 degree mark. Her Dr did tell me that might be as low as we could get it since it was so high to begin with. I just hope that she can break this overnight so we won't have to head back to the doctor in the morning. Otherwise it's going to be yet another long day.

Getting big

I promise I'll get back to the party posts in just a few days, I still have so much to share (including how I made A's frog smash cake!). But for now, I'm going to focus on my big girl.

We had her official one year appointment this morning. I was worried how she would do since she didn't get to bed last night until 11pm (her usual bedtime is 9). I was amazed with how well she did as we waited for her doctor. Since these waits can range from 10 minutes to an hour, I was prepared with plenty of toys and snacks to occupy her. She didn't need either since she was way too busy exploring the room.

Finally the doctor came in (we only waited for about 10 minutes this time). She did a good once over on little Miss and gave her the thumbs up. Everything looks perfect. She's right on track for where she should be and that makes me one proud momma. Her growth, however, seems to be going in many directions. This isn't a concern because it happens to most babies, but I'm so used to my chunky J (who was always off the charts). Her current stats are: weight 21lbs (50th%), length 31in (95th%), and head 44cm (40th%). Not bad numbers, but when you look at them on the growth chart it makes me nervous. Her weight is starting to level off, which happens because she's so active these days, and she's growing like a weed. She's grown three inches in three months! My main concern (and has been all along) is that her head measurements are so low. I can't remember what her head measured last time (although it's right here on the blog somewhere) but on the chart it seems to have plateaued. Not too alarming, but when it comes to her head, I want to make sure all is well. Her doctor doesn't seem to think anything is wrong because she physically checks out fine. I guess this worried mom need to chill out a bit.

Then came the hard part of the appointment, the shots. Poor little A had to get 4 of them including her flu shot I opted for. Thank goodness daddy was there to help hold her still, but the tears were enough to break both our hearts. She's a very strong willed girl and when she gets hurt/mad she doesn't forget easily. She cried for a good ten minutes although I'm sure the pain had subsided by then, it was the anger that had her still going. Thankfully I remembered I had those snacks on me. If there's one way to please this girl, it's food.

We're home now and I finally got her down for her nap (that's a whole other story these days) so hopefully she's still feeling good when she wakes up.

Allergy relief

I've been meaning to update on some very important news we found out last week.

On Tuesday the 30th, J finally had his appointment with the allergist to get more information about the peanut allergy we were told he may have due to elevated numbers on his blood work a few months back. We also wanted to check on his possible asthma. First the nurse came in and took all of J's vitals, she was rather impressed with how big of a boy he is. Then we got to see the doctor. Based upon J's past history and his rare episodes of not being able to breath, the doctor concluded that it wasn't full blown asthma that he had. But she still wanted us to keep all of his meds on hand since he does have some issues every now and then. So that was great news to hear.

Then came the tougher part, determining his peanut allergy. In order to do this J had to do the allergy scratch test. Needless to say, he freaked out. J has severe anxiety issues and does not like anything to be done to him that he is unsure of. So after about 20 minutes of talking to him and calming him down, we were ready to start. J had to lay down on the table so they could do the test on his back. I sat by his head, running my hands through his hair to keep him calm, taking him through the whole process. He did so well and the nurse was done in less than 2 minutes.

Then came the wait and see part. Poor J had to lay there with his back itching so bad. As we waited I could see quite a few spots turning into rather large bumps.  I later learned that it meant he was allergic to all of those items causing the bumps. So in the end we found out that he is highly allergic to many things, but luckily they are all environmental. That's right, my poor little man is allergic to all of the trees, grasses, and weeds they tested him for. The test also showed that he does have an allergy to peanuts and almonds but the doctor told us (based on J's history of eating those items without reaction) that he is probably allergic to the plant not the actual nut. This is the biggest relief of the day. I was so worried that he had an allergy to peanuts which we were told could be deadly.

Now we are just treating his allergies with prescription Zyrtec and Nasonex. So far we haven't had any major issues, just some random sneezing attacks here and there.

Well, hello there

I guess that's what you should be saying to me since I've been MIA for a week now. Goodness, I can't believe I'm already a blog slacker. Well, here is my official promise, I will post at least once a week. I already have plans for a daily (weekly?) topic to keep things going.

So for now, I'll leave you with this. Today was J and A's Dr apointments. J's was for his 8 year old well child and A's was for her 9 month old well child. Both did rather well and are as healthy as can be. A's stats are... weight 19.11 lbs (60th%), height 29 in (90th%), and head 44cm (50th%). J's stats are... weight 72 lbs (90th%) and height 54 in (97th%). I guess I have some big kiddos, lol. Also, J wasn't up-to-date with his shots so he had to have his HepA vac. He was not too happy and screamed bloddy murder for about 5 minutes beforehand. I even had to have a nurse take the baby so I could hold him down, lol. Of course, once he received the shot he stopped crying and asked if that was all. Then he thought he was big stuff becasue it didn't hurt. He was actually embarrassed when I brought up the fact he screamed like a little girl at first. We'll see how he does in 6 months when we go back for the booster...
